Default early fall vs. late fall baits

Do any of you differentiate between early fall and late fall baits. ...for example I like soft jerkbaits in early fall but once the water temps really start dropping I like hard suspending jerkbaits. Any thoughts?

I change up from faster moving baits to slower ones myself, the hard jerkbaits I use are floaters until the water temp drops then I use the suspending models, and senko type baits get passed up for jigs a lot more and my spinnerbait selection is different as I go from fast moving double willow models to slower moving baits with indiana and colorado blades.

Ken Penrod once said "Fall is the time to throw everything in your tackle box at them".

I let the fish tell me what they want.

The past few months on the UP have been grassy. Trebles and grass, IMHO, do not mix, so to avoid picking salad off my bait, I've moved away from trebles & exposed hooks.

When the grass clears, it'll be slow moving bottom draggers, or even slower moving suspended hard jerkbaits. But for now, I'm still throwing soft plastics in the mid-upper part of the water column and the bass are hungry.

I do something similar... Almost all of my hard baits come out in late fall and it's mostly soft baits in early fall. The closer it gets to late fall, the slower I will fish... Suspend, suspend, suspend!

in early fall like last 2 days and yesterday i use softbody jig/big grub or jig/craw and texas rig with crazy leg craw or chigger craw fishing on bottom and in late fall i switch to crankbait " countdown " fish slow when weed is dead and crankbait will do the job and it depend on depth,
on eau claire river/schofield floeage they doesnt have a deep water only 10'

Yep... the colder the water temps get, the slower the bait gets moved. I like fishing jerk baits most of the year, I just change up on the bait selection and work them different. As Hook-up said, I let them tell me what they want.

Dave and Hookup, great points. I was lucky enough to spend three entire days on the river this week. Weather conditions changed daily and so did the approach. One day finesse bait work SLOW in the shallow water where the ticket...the next day the fish moved to deep ledge trenches and wanted crawfish style bait fished dragged on the bottom.
