Went fishing at Lake Powell Sunday for the first time since last October, and for the first time out of my boat since I got it back from Ranger last November. The good news is the fishing was good. I nailed a couple 3-pounders and several between two and three pounds. All-in-all I think I caught 21. The better news is the boat appears to have been repaired properly (it had a split keel). There was not a drop of water in the bilge when I unscrewed the drain plug after taking it out. For that I am most grateful! :)

As you can see by the first photo of the sign, today was the approximate date set for the ramps reopening. From what I could tell, the new ramps are completed and the docks are in, but the water level is high and in the parking lot.

There is still heavy machinery in the parking lot and some material that needs to be removed before the parking facilities would be safe for public use.

The launch looks fantastic! The two docks are very accommodating. If you look closely, those two dock will move further out into the creek once the water level drops. In fact, I suspect they will be close to half way across the Pequea Creek! This should provide ample space for loading and unloading boats.

Please remember, there is a courtesy ramp just upstream for boaters to load their passengers and gear. One should not take up space and time at the loading/unloading ramps to do these types of chores.

A big thank you to PPL for finally completing the job they started two seasons ago!

Turned out that the planned trip to Ohio got cancelled due to wife getting sick, so I decided to hit the Shenendoah this morning. Travis (Beard) & his buddy were already planning on a single access trip, so we decided to meet up. It turned out that this day was a QUALITY day, not a quantity day

I got there about 7:30 & started floating down a bank. THe water was a little more stained than I thought, which I didn't mind. I started off with a Winco counter rotating buzz bait (blue glimmer), Mann's 1- (American Shad), Winco laminated wacky rig senko, chartuese & white War Eagle spinnerbait, & jig & craw. The pass down to the bank to a cold water inflow gave me three little smallies on the Mann's, buzz bait, & craw. I got to the inflow & got a solid fish take the buzz bait. A solid 17-18" largemouth half cleared the water and threw the lure. But a few casts later, this solid 16" largemouth liked the Winco wacky rig

Got a text from Travis that they were on their way, so I started back up to where they would be launching at. I saw them float through a small rapid & started working a few pools, so I slowed down & started working a "big flat" with scattered ledge rocks. I managed to pick up a 14" largemouth on the crank & a few more smallies on buzz bait and crank. THis 14" smallie liked the buzz bait.

I paddled up to meet Travis, his buddy & buddy's wife & we worked over the few pools. Travis was throwing a 4" worm rigged wacky into the main current seam and landing some smallies. His buddy landed a few also. We focused on these areas for a decent amount of time until I decided to move up above the current & hit a few new areas close to the launch. I still had the spinnerbait tied on, because from here till winter I'll be stubborn & throw it even with no hits. Got above the pool & into a shallower, heavier current area in the middle of another pool. On the 3rd or 4th cast, the spinnerbait just STOPPED! THen something started pulling back & rolled on top. THought it was a catfish until it came up again. THen I realized it was a HUGE SMALLIE. After a few tense minutes of fighting it in the current, the smallie was in hand.

This smallie came in right at 19.5" & is now my new Personal Best. It beat my old personal best by an inch. The pics doesn't do it complete justice, as the fish was just thick. I've been waiting for a good spinnerbait bite, which this piggie solved.

We must have hit a prime feeding window. Travis's buddy caught a 15.5" shortly after, I lost another solid fish on the spinnerbait, & caught a little 12". The three of them started working the head of the next pool & the immediate riffle area. Travis found the perfect spot & pulled in a number of 10-13" smallies on the wacky rig. All of us moved below another rapid to focus on that & it's current seam. I got a 12" or so on the Winco Wacky rig & lost another solid 17" smallie (at least) that jumped and threw my Winco Predator Craw.

I ended up with 11 smallies. Two biggest went 19.5" & 16". Lost two more big ones . Majority of fish were caught on reaction lures (crank, buzz bait, & spinnerbait). Travis caught the majority of his fish on the senko, a non-reaction lure.

I am trying to learn to fly fish for smallies in the river were I can wade for them. I do a lot or trout fly fishing on south Holston. I was told I could find smallies on north fork of holston river. I tried out my new outfit today on the north fork in Kingsport tn. I had no luck I was told that they were tearing up the flies I had purchased at local fly shop. The small mouth was probably there I just wasn't in the right area I know nothing of the north and south fork of holston and I have know clue to we're to find a good place to start fishing for small mouth and pointers would be greatly appreciated thanks!

FInally getting around to posting up Sunday morning's early outing on the Shenendoah. I was on the water @ 6:15 & managed to get in 2.5 hours in before loading up and heading home for church services.

Air temps were about 65 with complete cloud cover. I started off throwing a WInco counter rotating buzz bait, Winco predator craw on a flutter head, grub, & Mann's 1- crank bait. First stop was a "semi-eddy" area between two significant faster water areas. Got a swipe on the buzz bait until starting the morning off with a chunky 16" that nailed the Predator Craw.

I left that area to continue focusing on riffle/small rapid areas and adjacent current seams. I alternated between the four lures in and along current seams. I picked up a few more 10-12" smallies below the next riffle on the Predator Craw. I switched the grub over to a Winco 4" laminated wacky rig worm when hitting the next riffle area. I picked up 4 more little guys throwing on the rapid's current seam. The fish were just picking up the worm on the drift. I also got a few more smallies on the Predator Craw also, with a couple at 13-14".

Hitting the last riffle area, I got another little buzz bait bite going. I picked up 3 more smallies on the current seam, including this 14".

It was a good morning on the river. I ended up with 15 smallies all on Winco lures. THe biggest went 16" & three more at 14". All the fish were holding along the current seams, primarily on the slower side.

All this talk of the Susquehanna smallies but nothing I saw of that beautiful mountain jewel, the Schuylkill River! Now, being from Pa of course I know nothing can beat the shear craziness of smallmouth fishing on the Susky and the Juniata, especially stories of 120 fish in two days. That's just nuts! But, wait! there's a river that winds it's way south from Tamaqua and Minersville until it runs smack dab into the Delaware. Now, I will admit that the number of fish caught in a day may not be the highest but if you're like me and are willing to fight for that prized catch. The Schuylkill, upon begging, pleading, and romancing her, will in fact pay out amazingly. I've been everywhere on that river from Cross Keys Road north along it's banks. (Cross Keys is slightly north of Reading, Pa.) And from that river I have pulled a plethora of fish willing to fight to the bitter end. Between the Smallies, Brown Trout, and Muskies the river offers a real war if you're willing to accepts it's challenges.

Hello all!

My name is Dave, I decided to join the forums after reading a few of the articles on the main site. I've recently rediscovered my love of fishing after a lengthy break from the sport. Previously I was more of a trout fisherman both on fly gear and hardware. This newest venture has seen me on a path to find the best fight on the water. This has lead me on the search out both small and largemouth bass in my area. I live in berks county Pa and the schuylkill river here has provided me quite a few decently sized smallies and the local reservoir, lake Ontelaunee, has provided an opportunity to land the buckets. My purpose for joining the forums is to learn more about bass and what it requires to land the big ones!

BulletBobber Users Updates

Here are the latest updates for using BulletBobbers provided by users.

Fish the entire area inside the outlined area by using the fast current...

Here are the latest updates for using BulletBobbers provided by users.

Fish the entire area inside the outlined area by using the fast current indicated by the cross hatched area.
Flip the lever so you can reel out line as fast as needed to work it across the fast currents and keeping it from diving.
If it goes into a dive I pull hard making the rod bend then give it slack so it comes back up and continue to work across the fast currents.
If the fish are down in the fast currents making it dive will take your lure or bait down.
Very light repetitive popping will make the BulletBobber jiggle, plane sideways and point up providing a flutter / jigging action.

The instructions explain weight limits, how to rig it, and how to bias the flipping one way or the other.

If for any reason you don’t want it to flip…
Adding a clamp to a keel makes it much more difficult to flip direction and adding a larger clamp to far wing makes it more stable by holding down the keel.

If you want to fish deep with the BulletBobber you can drill a 1/16” hole through the peg.
As you can see I didn’t get all the way through before the drill bit came out the side but close is good enough.
To rig it thread everything like shown and then make a loop and put the peg in.
When you set the hook the loop will straighten out and everything will slide down the line so you can reel in.
If you are in a boat just hold the bobber and let your lure or bait drop to the bottom.
Then lift it up the distance you want to troll off the bottom and attach the BulletBobber with a loop.
Pull out the loop by hand a couple times to get the feel for the release sensitivity you want.

I was drawn to a comment that appeared in the PA Angler and Boater Magazine regarding the management of walleye on Pymatuning Reservoir. In many ways it sums up the approach to environmental and fishery problems used by the PFBC and is somewhat applicable to another thread now running about the black spots in smallmouth bass.

The Pymatuning walleye population began declining in 2001 with whole year classes of fish missing. By 2007 there was a radical decline in walleye in the lake. Here is the quote that caught my attention. Tim Wilson, PFBC fisheries biologist is quoted…”We weren’t as concerned with the cause as with restoring the fishery.”

Restoration is certainly welcome but why the decline of natural reproduction? The cause remains unknown.
What they did was start harvesting eggs from females and sperm from males and entering into an aggressive restoration (stocking) program through artificial reproduction.

The walleye-stocking program on the Susquehanna River was stopped in 2007 and by 2010/2011 it became apparent that walleye numbers had dropped substantially and natural reproduction was lacking. Why? The cause remains unknown.

Also, for 10 years smallmouth natural reproduction has fallen significantly as demonstrated by YOY studies. Why? Well…the cause remains unknown.

It is my understanding that walleye stocking in the Susquehanna will resume just as it was begun at Pymatuning. Restoration is the priority in order not to lose fishing and boating revenues. (my opinion) The cause remains unknown because it is not a priority.

But why is it happening?
Lake Apopka (Florida) alligators aren’t reproducing effectively and the males have small penises and low sperm counts. The problem is due to chemical pollution.
In the 1960’s bald eagle numbers dropped sharply because of reproductive problems caused by DDT.
Investigation in fish, amphibians, ocean mammals and humans around the globe has targeted chemical endocrine disruptors as causative agents for reproductive problems.

Look at the human species. We have reproductive problems also. Failure of ovulation (production of eggs) is the most common cause (almost 70%) of infertility in women. In men low sperm counts account for the primary cause of infertility. While there are multiple causes for these problems in both sexes, there is much research currently being focused on the influence of chemicals in the environment as a significant cause.
Human “in vitro fertilization” began in 1981. Eggs are harvested from the female and sperm from the male and fertilization is accomplished artificially. Sounds familiar. Perhaps we could call it stocking humans.

We need to know the reason why!! When your grandchild or great grandchild asks you why they have to live with all these problems, I hope you have an answer for why. And I hope you can say that you recognized one of the problems and did advocate for clean water and a clean watershed with much less chemical pollution.

Contact the PFBC, the PADEP and the Governors office and let them know that you want to now WHY these problems are plaguing our watershed and you want cleaner water now.
Thanks.
